Ep 17 – Motivational Interviewing for Multimorbidity

Motivational Interviewing for multimorbidity

Kylie McKenzie discussing Motivational Interviewing for multimorbidity
Kylie McKenzie

Kylie’s clinical work, focused on mental health and chronic illness, led to the discovery of motivational interviewing as an engaging way to support and promote health behaviour change. Since becoming a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers in 2008, Kylie has been selected as a lead trainer for international workshops in Krakow (2013), Atlanta (2014) and Melbourne (2015). Kylie is a final year PhD Candidate in the Department of General Practice at the University of Melbourne, and her research focuses on the potential of Motivational Interviewing when working with people living with mental-physical multimorbidity.

Multimorbidity can create complex conversations because people may be managing several conditions, competing priorities and multiple recommendations at the same time. Kylie explores how MI can help clinicians move beyond an “assess and advise” approach and work collaboratively with the person to identify what matters most and where change feels possible.

The discussion considers patient-centred care, giving advice effectively, asking questions in the direction of change and collaborative focusing. It also connects with information exchange in Motivational Interviewing, particularly when clinicians need to share expertise while continuing to respect autonomy.
