Advanced Motivational Interviewing with Mentoring
Develop your Motivational Interviewing practice through advanced skills development, recorded practice, individual feedback and mentoring.
About the programme
This programme is designed for practitioners who have already completed introductory Motivational Interviewing training and want to deepen their ability to use MI skilfully and consistently in everyday practice.
The programme combines two experiential classroom training days with four recorded practice conversations and four individual one-to-one mentoring sessions. Participants have opportunities to practise, reflect on their work and receive personalised feedback to support continued development.
Who is it for?
The programme is intended for practitioners using Motivational Interviewing in health, mental health, substance use, tobacco, social care and related services. For PHA-funded programmes, applicants are required to have completed eligible introductory MI training with a MINT-trained trainer within the previous two years.
Develop your Advanced Motivational Interviewing skills
- Greater fluency in the four tasks of MI: engaging, focusing, evoking and planning.
- More skilful use of reflective listening, including complex reflections.
- Greater ability to recognise and strengthen change talk.
- Ways of responding to sustain talk and discord while maintaining partnership.
- Purposeful use of open questions, affirmations and summaries.
- Greater awareness of partnership, acceptance, compassion and empowerment in practice.
- Greater confidence integrating MI skills naturally within real conversations.
Advanced Motivational Interviewing practice and mentoring
Following the classroom training, participants submit four audio recordings of real practice conversations exploring change. Each recording provides the focus for an individual mentoring session.
Feedback is informed by the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity framework (MITI 4.2.1) and focuses on strengths, areas for development and practical opportunities for continued learning. The purpose is developmental rather than pass or fail.
Programme completion
Participants are expected to attend both classroom training days, submit four practice recordings and participate in all four individual mentoring sessions. A certificate of completion is provided when the programme requirements have been fulfilled.
