PHA-Funded Motivational Interviewing Training
Motivational Interviewing training commissioned and funded by the Public Health Agency for eligible practitioners and services across Northern Ireland.
This is a dedicated PHA training programme with its own eligibility, application and attendance arrangements. It is separate from paid Open MI Workshops and from bespoke training commissioned directly by organisations.
Developing Motivational Interviewing practice
The PHA-funded programme provides experiential Motivational Interviewing training designed to support practitioners to develop conversations about change, choice and ambivalence in health and social care practice.
Introduction to Motivational Interviewing
The introductory programme develops the foundations of MI through experiential learning and skills practice.
- The Spirit of MI and PACE
- OARS + I and reflective listening
- The Four Tasks
- Change Talk and Sustain Talk
- The Fixing Reflex
- Information Exchange
Advanced MI with Mentoring
Advanced training supports practitioners who have completed appropriate introductory MI training to develop their practice further.
- Advanced skills development
- Deliberate practice
- Recorded practice submissions
- Individual feedback and mentoring
- Developing greater MI fidelity
Eligibility, prerequisites and attendance
Places on PHA-funded training are limited and are intended for eligible practitioners working in Northern Ireland. The relevant eligibility and application arrangements are set out for each programme and should be checked before applying.
Advanced MI with Mentoring is for practitioners who have completed experiential Introduction to Motivational Interviewing training, led by a MINT member, within the previous two years. Practitioners who meet this prerequisite do not need to repeat the Introduction programme before applying, although they are welcome to revisit it.
General and reserved cohorts. Most PHA-funded cohorts are available to eligible practitioners from across Northern Ireland. Some cohorts are reserved for staff from a specific organisation and use a dedicated registration route. Working for an organisation that also has reserved cohorts does not prevent a practitioner from applying for an available general PHA cohort; reserved status is determined by the specific cohort and registration route selected.
