Ep 15 – Motivational Interviewing in Health Care
Motivational Interviewing in healthcare
In Episode 15 of Talking to Change: A Motivational Interviewing Podcast, Dr Damara Gutnick joins Glenn Hinds and Sebastian Kaplan to explore Motivational Interviewing in healthcare.
Damara is the medical director of the Montefiore Hudson Valley Collaborative (MHVC) in New York State. She is an Associate Professor in the departments of Epidemiology and Population Health, Family Medicine, & Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine, and Director of Quality and Research at the non-profit Centre for Collaboration, Motivation & Innovation (http://www.centrcmi.ca). A trainer, clinician, and member of the MINT (Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers), Dr. Gutnick is passionate about encouraging clinicians to incorporate the “spirit” of MI into their discussions with patients and dedicated to integrating MI based best practices into health care delivery systems to improve patient engagement in their care. Damara has presented MI based workshops at national and international forums including the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI), American College of Physicians (ACP), the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM), the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and the MINT Forum. Glenn and Sebastian talk with Damara about incorporating MI into the world of a busy physician through more efficient, effective and even joyful conversations. The episode explores how clinicians can use MI within short healthcare appointments while keeping the patient’s priorities central. Damara discusses shifting from asking only “What’s the matter?” towards also asking “What matters to you?”, and how this can support engagement, autonomy and whole-person care. The conversation also covers clinician burnout, change talk, self-compassion and learning MI by starting small. These ideas connect with the Spirit of Motivational Interviewing and the practical challenge of integrating MI into everyday healthcare.
