Ep 44 – MI & Social Support for Opiate & Stimulant Use Disorders
Opiate
In part two of a pair of episodes on MI for opiate and stimulant use
disorders, Glenn and Sebastian happily welcomed Paul Delaney to the podcast. Paul is a clinical supervisor, therapist, adult educationalist and trainer, based in Dublin, Ireland. His background is in the addictions field originally working as an addiction counsellor helping to develop Employee Assistance Programmes. He received his initial training in Motivational Interviewing in 1992 in the UK and after further training he became a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) after attending the first MINT Forum in Malta in 1997. Paul says he was privileged to have been chosen to chair the local host committee for the 20th anniversary meeting of MINT, held in Dublin, Ireland in October 2017. He holds a pilot’s licence and says that in his leisure time he likes nothing better than flying his group’s Cirrus SR20 aircraft, stating that it helps to keep him grounded!
Motivational Interviewing, social support and substance use
Paul explores Motivational Interviewing with people who use opioids and stimulants, with particular attention to autonomy, social support and harm reduction. The conversation illustrates how MI spirit can help practitioners remain alongside a person without moving too quickly towards the practitioner’s preferred focus.
The episode considers the premature focus trap, supporting autonomy when someone uses heroin, harm reduction and connections between MI and restorative justice. These themes connect with Partnership, Empowerment and Focusing in Motivational Interviewing.
