Ep 39 – MI with people who are homeless
In exploring MI with people who are homeless, Glenn and Sebastian, warmly welcome Danny Lang, MSW to the podcast. Danny has over 25 years’ experience in the field of mental health
and substance misuse. He currently works as a registered social worker, psychotherapist at the Canadian Mental Health Association in Ottawa Canada where he provides group and individual therapy for individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Danny is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and his areas of interest include homelessness, concurrent disorders and working with male survivors of sexual abuse.
Motivational Interviewing with people who are homeless
Danny explores how Motivational Interviewing can support respectful, person-centred work with people experiencing homelessness, mental health difficulties and substance use concerns. A central theme is the importance of MI spirit as the relational foundation for the conversation, rather than treating MI as a collection of techniques.
The episode also considers the Fixing Reflex, client feedback, self-care and knowing when MI may not be the most appropriate response. These themes connect with the Spirit of Motivational Interviewing, the Fixing Reflex and Engaging.
