Ep 13 – MI with CBT and health behaviour change with adolescents

Motivational Interviewing and CBT with adolescents

How can Motivational Interviewing and CBT work together when supporting adolescents and young adults? In Episode 13 of Talking to Change, Glenn Hinds and Sebastian Kaplan talk with Dr Sylvie Naar about combining MI with Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and supporting health behaviour change.

Dr Sylvie Naar is a Distinguished Endowed Professor in the College of Medicine’s department of Behavioural Sciences and Social Medicine at Florida State University. Sylvie is a Distinguished Endowed Professor in the College of Medicine’s department of Behavioural Sciences and Social Medicine at Florida State University, Dr Sylvie Naar, Motivational Interviewing researcher and health psychologistwhere she is the founding director of the Center for Translational Behavioural Science. She is a pediatric health psychologist with over 20 years’ experience as a clinician and researcher. Sylvie has conducted research on health disparities for minority youth living with HIV, diabetes, and obesity through several federally funded projects utilizing Motivational Interviewing to improve health behaviours in adolescents both in randomized clinical trials and in implementation evaluation contexts. She is a co-author of the first textbook focusing on adolescents and young adults for Guildford Press’ Motivational Interviewing series

Motivational Interviewing with Adolescents and Young Adults.

She is also the co-author of the first book dedicated to MI and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, also from Guilford Press.

In this episode, Sylvie explores how Motivational Interviewing can complement Cognitive Behaviour Therapy when working with adolescents and young adults. MI can help practitioners engage with a young person’s own priorities and motivation, while CBT can offer structured strategies for translating intentions into action. The conversation examines how the approaches can work together without losing the collaborative nature of MI.

Sylvie also discusses health behaviour change in the context of HIV, diabetes and obesity, cultural differences, autonomy support and implementation science. The discussion includes responding selectively to change talk, using reflective listening, and maintaining respect for autonomy within purposeful conversations about change.
