Ep 11 Teaching & Learning MI

Teaching and Learning Motivational Interviewing

In Episode 11 of Talking to Change: A Motivational Interviewing Podcast, we had the pleasure of sitting down with David Rosengren, PhD, President and CEO of the Prevention Research Institute (https://www.primeforlife.org/) in Lexington, Kentucky, USA. David is also the author of Building Motivational Interviewing Skills: A Practitioner Workbook (2nd edition) (https://www.guilford.com/books/Building-Motivational-Interviewing-Skills/David-Rosengren/9781462532063). In this episode, David discusses a variety of topics relating to the teaching and learning of Motivational Interviewing. Learning Motivational Interviewing involves more than understanding its principles. Developing skill requires practice, feedback and opportunities to experiment with different ways of responding. David explores the distinction between mastery and fluency, along with exercises that help practitioners develop greater flexibility and confidence in MI conversations. The episode considers reflective practice, growth mindset and ways of teaching MI that encourage active learning rather than relying only on explanation. David also demonstrates practical exercises for developing reflective listening and discusses how curiosity, practice and feedback contribute to developing Motivational Interviewing skills.
