Motivational Interviewing Workshops

Motivational Interviewing Workshops

Our Motivational Interviewing (MI) workshops are designed for professionals who want to strengthen their ability to support change through skilled, compassionate conversation. Whether you work in mental health, smoking cessation, or substance use services, each programme is tailored to your context and learning goals. Funded training is available for eligible services across Northern Ireland through the Public Health Agency (PHA).

At Glenn Hinds Motivation & Coaching Consultants, our MI workshops help professionals develop the confidence and skill to have purposeful, person-centred conversations that make a difference. All workshops are bespoke, adapted to your organisation’s context, service users, and learning needs.

Each workshop combines concise theory, demonstration, guided practice, and reflection. Participants explore the spirit of MI — collaboration, acceptance, compassion, and empowerment — and practise the four tasks: engaging, focusing, evoking, and planning. Through live exercises, case discussions, and real-play scenarios, learners strengthen their ability to:

  • Build trust and engagement through reflective listening
  • Identify and strengthen motivation for change
  • Respond effectively to ambivalence and resistance
  • Support clients in developing and committing to achievable plans
  • Integrate MI skills into multidisciplinary practice and service delivery

By the end of the training, participants understand not only what MI is, but how to use it effectively within their day-to-day roles.

Sector-Specific Workshops

Mental Health Services

Our MI training for mental health practitioners focuses on strengthening collaboration, supporting autonomy, and improving engagement. Participants learn how MI can be used to explore ambivalence around medication, therapy attendance, or lifestyle changes. Workshops draw from real-world scenarios, helping practitioners integrate MI into care planning, crisis de-escalation, and recovery-oriented approaches.

Smoking Cessation

For tobacco control and smoking cessation teams, the workshop helps practitioners move beyond advice-giving towards client-led exploration. Using MI principles, participants learn how to evoke personal reasons for quitting, navigate relapse with empathy, and maintain engagement across the quit journey. Many services now integrate MI across telephone, community, and clinical support pathways — increasing client satisfaction and long-term quit success.

Substance Use Services

Substance use practitioners explore how MI supports conversations about harm reduction, readiness to change, and relapse prevention. The training emphasises evoking self-motivation rather than persuasion, helping practitioners balance empathy with accountability. MI has become a core component of substance use services across Northern Ireland, informing assessments, care planning, and multidisciplinary interventions.

Integration and Impact

Motivational Interviewing is now embedded in many health and social care frameworks across the UK and Ireland. It is increasingly recognised as a foundation for trauma-informed practice and person-centred care. Services applying MI report improved engagement, reduced drop-out rates, and stronger outcomes across mental health, substance use, and smoking cessation programmes.
All workshops are designed collaboratively with commissioners and teams to ensure relevance, alignment with organisational goals, and measurable impact.
