Motivational Interviewing Level 1
This Introduction to Motivational Interviewing training series is ideal for everyone who provides support and counselling to people expressing a need or wish to change and where other’s have identified concern for the individual’s health or wellbeing.
What To Expect
Whether you are new to Motivational Interviewing or have already some knowledge or experience of using it in your work, this interactive skills focussed training will support you enhance your existing helping interventions and introduce you to understanding and integrating the essential elements of good MI practice.
Agenda
The training is scheduled online via Zoom on 7th, 8th & 16th November 10.00am to 4.00pm, with comfort breaks in the morning, and afternoon and for lunch at 1.00pm.
🎓 Learning Outcomes:
The training will be interactive and highly participatory with focus on:
- Understand the Core Principles: Master the four essential TASKS of Motivational Interviewing—Engaging, Focusing, Evoking, and Planning.
- Skill Development: Practice advanced techniques like reflective listening, open questioning, and affirming through interactive exercises.
- Navigate Resistance: Learn how to deal with ambivalence, discord, and resistance in a non-confrontational manner.
- Evidence-based Practice: Familiarise yourself with the latest best-practice research findings, ensuring your approach is both current and effective.
- The Tools of MI: Learn how to effectively assess and develop an individual’s readiness to change. Give advice and share information more efficiently and effectively understand and how to assist the client to resolve the ‘barriers’ to change
- Outcome Assessment: Implement strategies to measure client outcomes, enhancing the efficacy of your interventions.
- Ethical Guidelines: Acquire insights into the ethical considerations in Motivational Interviewing to maintain a high standard of professional conduct.
- Application in Various Sectors: Discover how to tailor the principles of Motivational Interviewing to your specific field—be it health, education, or criminal justice.
- Maintaining YOUR Motivation: Explore and understand the impact helping others has on your wellbeing and how to avoid burnout, maintain balance and stay healthy.
How to get the most from the seminar series
Participants will have the opportunity to forward questions in advance of each seminar, and time will be provided to respond to queries as they arise during the presentation.

The Trainer
Glenn Hinds is an accredited counsellor and independent training consultant trained in person centred and psychodynamic counselling, motivational interviewing and emotional intelligence (EQ).
Glenn was trained to offer training in ‘The Therapeutic Uses of Motivational Interviewing’ by Professor William Miller in Crete, Greece 2003 and ‘The Use of Motivational Interviewing in Primary Care’ by Professor Steve Rollnick in Portland, USA 2004 and is a member of the International Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT). He also completed Motivational Interviewing Training Integrity (MITI) training in March 2006 and updated to MITI 4.1 in May 2023. Glenn also completed Motivational Interviewing Supervisory Training (MIST) with Professor Miller and Dr. Terri Moyers in Albuquerque, January 2007.
A certified Emotional Intelligence practitioner and Advanced EQ trainer, Glenn also offers one to one coaching and organisational development workshops.
